Hi Andy, How did you guys settle on having Cristin Milioti sing "La Vie en Rose" in the episode, How Your Mother Met Me? | Co-creator of the show Carter Bays, who I've been lucky enough to work with over the past 8 years, wrote this into the script for the episode. They knew Cristin could sing after seeing her in Once on Broadway. I know he was inspired by the use of the song in the film Sabrina . Her performance was shot live on set and it's just so achingly beautiful. Definitely one of my favorite music moments in the show. |
Watching Cristin Milloti sing 'La Vie En Rose' brought me to tears, and I've been utterly obsessed with that clip ever since. Its incredibly moving, she is immensely talented. No question just wanted to say, umm..thanks for supervising! Oh, actual question! The continual use of 'I Would Walk 500 Miles'. Just how sick of that song are you now? | Not sick of it at all! Maybe if it was the only thing I could listen to in my car for a few years I'd be sick of it but I've loved our running use of the song through the series. |
Is there a possibility that The Solids will play "Hey Beautiful" at the wedding? | You never know! HIMYM always has plenty of surprises in store. Guess you'll just have to tune in and watch. |
Has there ever been a time when you wanted to use a particular song but because of rights or whatever you had to pick a different one? | Yes, this happens every now and then. But over time you get to know which artists are "tough clears" and when they come up you plan ahead by having a Plan B in case you're not able to get the rights to the first choice. We also have to work within a set budget on the show which can be challenging. So there have been occasions where we are able to clear a song but it's too pricey for our budget and have to move on to something else. It comes with the territory though- we work hard to make the projects the best they can be but still have to work within the limitations of budgets, etc. In fact I just got back to my office from a spotting session on the penultimate episode of the series. You won't get any spoilers from me but I will say we have a Plan A song and a plan B song for a big moment in the episode because the Plan A song is from an artist that often declines to license their music. |
What's the most outrageous song you've snuck into an episode? | One song comes to mind but I don't know if I'd necessarily say it was outrageous. We used the song "Freakin' Out" from a band called Death (there's now a documentary out about them, it's called A Band Called Death.) We played the song when Lily and Marshall are wrapping their heads around soon becoming parents and rush around their apartment trying to finish their long to do list in a matter of minutes - like baby proofing the apartment. It was so over the stop and lyrically spot on, definitely got a lot of laughs. |
Hey Andy! Thanks for doing this. What is the best advice you could give to someone who is aspiring to be a music supervisor? How did you get your foot in the door? | Happy to be here, thank you all for joining me for my AMA! Honestly I got very lucky with how I got into Music Supervision. Good luck, good timing, and made the most out of each opportunity. I came to LA from San Francisco back in 2002 with the direct mission to break into the field but had no idea how to go about it. This was back when it was still an under the radar, niche role. I caught a break from a cold call and the rest is history (there's a great story here but it's long so maybe I'll revisit after answering some more questions. My advice to you if you're interested is to study the craft - watch movies, watch TV shows, pay attention to the music (songs and score), and if it's something you're truly passionate about it will show when an opportunity knocks. |
Thanks! Would love to hear the story. | OK one quick follow up factoid to my breaking in story . When I got the call back from Kevin Edelman (still work with him to this day 12 years later!) I was on the roof of Amoeba Hollywood where I was working at the time. He asked me to meet him and Alex P. and the address he gave me was the building directly across the street, no joke. I told him I'd be there in 10 seconds, walked off the job at Amoeba and the rest is history. |
Andy thanks for doing this AMA. Just wondering if we will ever get a full length version of 'The Longest Time' from HIMYM? Link to www.youtube.com. | I think Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (here on out referred to as CB and CT) was asked this same question during their AMA (which you should all read!). It came together so fast that we didn't have much time to plan for a full length recording of the song. In fact at the time there was some concern that we didn't have the budget for the song rights so I was busy coming up with other ideas. Luckily we pulled the trigger and went with the Billy Joel song- it's such a memorable moment from the show. |
What are some of your best sources of finding new/cool music? Do you use spotify or something similar? Thanks! | I use Spotify mainly for personal use and to just do some quick listening when compiling ideas. But for the job I need to be able to get the actual files in people hands- editors , music editors, producers , directors, etc. so I manage a VERY VERY large iTunes database. Spotify and Pandora are great new services that I music fans can use to discover new artists they love but I hope people are still directly supporting those artists by purchasing their music so they can make a living doing what they love (and what we love them doing). |
How much time do you normally have to find music for an episode or a film? Do you balance multiple projects at once? | It varies but on average I'd say it's about 5- 6 weeks from the time I first get a script for an episode until that episode is on the air. I start working on compiling ideas from the script but you never know what's going to work until you see the footage , only then do you get a full sense of the timing and tone of a scene which really helps inform my song choices. One song does jump out at me though as an anomaly - "Rewind" by Goldspot that we used in episode 502. I heard that song in my head as I read the script and immediately just knew it would be perfect...and sure enough once we got footage we put it into the scene and it WAS perfect. Self five! |
Hi Andy :) What was the hiring process like for HIMYM? When did you realize that you loved working for the show? Also -- what's next for you? | Funny story and one I recently recounted to CB and CT at the wrap party we had to celebrate the end of shooting. HIMYM did not have a music supervisor on season 1 . The studio (20th Century Fox) likely assumed the show would not be a song heavy show since it is mostly a multi-camera format . That format just naturally doesn't lend itself to featuring songs. But HIMYM uses music like a single camera show and so the studio wanted to put a music supervisor on it for the second season. Luckily they thought of me since I was young at the time and CT and CB were young compared to most TV showrunners so they thought we'd be a good fit. We did a trial run on the DVD version of Season 1- unfortunately we had to strip out a bulk of the songs used in that season because the licensing costs to put them on the DVD were too high. So CT and CB's first impression of me was some guy they didn't know coming in and telling them they couldn't have songs they loved from the show! I don't know how they didn't end up hating me but for some reason they didn't (or do and just keep it a secret) but I was kept on the show and now 8 years later we're wrapping it up in style. |
What are you working on nowadays and what styles of music do you find yourself going to again and again? | Thanks for the opportunity to plug some new projects! As many of you know How I Met Your Dad is in the works. It's just a pilot right now but they landed the amazing Greta Gerwig to play the lead character. I'm excited about the possibility of working on that (not official yet). I'm also working on a new animated series starring Will Arnett and Aaron Paul called BoJack Horseman. It's for Netflix and will premiere this August (subject to change!) We're currently working on our theme song and though I have to keep it under wraps for now I can say it's going to be awesome! |
Also I worked on a great indie film called The Pretty One starring Zoe Kazan and Jake Johnson from New Girl. Look for it in arthouse theaters near you!
Will an excellent knowledge of American music of the past 50 years see you through? Or do you need to know the ins and outs of Bollywood sitar, Chinese opera, Scottish fiddling and that throat singing Sheldon sometimes does, to make it in your line of work? | I think a general knowledge of all musical styles is an important aspect to bring to the job. You need a musical encyclopedia though not necessarily be an expert in each area. It helps in the creative process when you're brainstorming ideas- especially working on a comedy because much of the time you're trying to come up with something that will play a scene comedically. But the job goes well beyond knowing a lot about different types of music - it's a very left brain / right brain job. There's the creative aspect where you're coming up with different ways to play a scene but there's also a lot of administrative and political aspects to the job. It's not all fun and games - there's a lot of paperwork! |
What is the one band you wished you could have got on the show? | Oh man, tough question. Thanks clearside. I comb through so many songs and typically present to Carter and Craig multiple ideas per scene and we can only use 1 in the show so for every song we use there's dozens of others we don't use. In fact a quick glance at my iTunes shows I've earmarked approx 1600 songs for HIMYM in the last 2 years. These are songs I resonated with the show in mind for a variety of reasons and most will never make it into the show. There are a few artists that I'm a big fan of that I've never been able to use in a project for one reason or another, one that instantly comes to mind is Neil Young. He rarely says yes to a licensing request but I was able to clear one of his songs for HIMYM once but it ended up being too pricey for our budget so we had to use something else. One of these days Neil, one of these days... |
Have you ever chilled with any of the actors? | Segel has me over for Mai Tai's every weekend. OK, that doesn't happen. But I have been very fortunate to get to know Josh Radnor over the years. I think we officially met at our annual HIMYM Xmas party and got to talking about bands and music . We bonded over a mutual love for Dr. Dog and when Josh was making his first film HappyThankYouMorePlease he gave me a call. And who ended up being our credit song? Dr. Dog! If you haven't seen either of his films yet (the other being Liberal Arts) I definitely recommend them and not just because I was a part of them. Josh has such a distinct voice and approach to life and I think that shows in his films, they really are an extension of himself. |
Hi Andy! I'm a Bay Area resident, and have been most of my life. Anything about your growing up in this area influence your musical taste/style? Any native songs you snuck into HIMYM? Also, what stores did you work at? Always looking for new places to go. | Good question! The Bay Area definitely has a rich musical history but I grew up in Vacaville, CA just outside the culturally rich areas of SF and Berkeley/Oakland so I wasn't exposed to it growing up. And though my parents had a few LPs stashed in the garage (Black Sabbath?! That doesn't sound like my dad , guess he was cool once upon a time) they weren't very big on music. My older brother Cory was into music before me and I gleaned a lot from him. He took off to Berkeley after high school and I'd go to concerts with him at Gilman St and in SF. At the time Lookout! Records was a pretty big deal in the area with bands like Green Day and Operation Ivy. I was totally into that stuff and then once I got to college at SF State a whole new musical landscape opened up to me. I worked at Tower Records in the Stonestown Galleria for a year and then was at Amoeba Music on Haight St for almost 3 years. Amoeba was like working at the record store in High Fidelity except on steroids. It's so HUGE and instead of 3 know it all music geeks there were about 100. I soaked it all up like a sponge. |
What was the first concert you ever went to? How old were you? | OK, I'd have to call my mom to confirm but I believe my first official concert was seeing Hall & Oates @ Great America amusement park in Santa Clara, CA when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I think I got bored and fell asleep on a wooden bench. I love Hall & Oates now but 8 year old me didn't get "Maneater". |
Do you work at all with the set design crew? Do you really think Ted would be a Mustard Plug fan? | I do not work with them or the wardrobe department but I see Ted as more of a Less Than Jake or Skankin' Pickle fan rather than Mustard Plug. I do love the vintage jazz t-shirts Ted is often wearing! |
Thanks for your answer! That Mustard Plug poster always seemed out of place to me. Ted is far too serious for the bro-ish wackiness of Mustard Plug. I definitely see him being into Asian Man Records/The Slackers and lots of 2-tone/first wave/rocksteady. | Let's Go Bowling! I was a third wave ska kid for a spell in high school so I get these references and I'm not embarrassed one bit. |
Was it your idea to choose "Hey, beautiful" as an intro song? | No, that was decided before my time on the show. If you guys all don't know The Solids is actually Carter and Craig's band and the HIMYM theme music is the last 10 seconds of their song "Hey Beautiful". |
off, thank you for introducing me to so many songs that I had never even heard of before, but now are regularly played on my iPod. Chief among them is Simple Song by the Shins, such a great choice for that moment in the show. Is Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) by George Harrison going to make a reappearance during the wedding? | I will neither confirm or deny. You'll have to watch and see. Whatever we use in the finale will be legend...wait for it...until 3/31. |
Hi. Thank you for doing this AMA. I have always wondered how exactly did you/do you find so many great songs to use? Do you use certain websites that show you similar bands (like Liveplasma) or do you just go through as many as you possibly can? | I don't use any websites or music blogs to inform my song ideas. Mainly just good old fashioned listening. As you can imagine we get inundated with so much music from all over the globe sent to us from everyone ranging to the major labels & publishers, third party licensing agencies, managers, independent bands, etc. It's part of my job to sift through it and filter out what make sense for my current projects . Since I've been doing this since 2002 the way I listen to music has changed- I now hear everything through a film/TV prism always visualizing what kind a scene a song could play. |
Hi what are you going to miss most when the show is over? By the way Im watching season 9 episode 17 right now! | I don't go to every one but I went to the table read for the finale. I chose not to read the script beforehand because I wanted to experience it for the first time in the room with my HIMYM family. That's what I'm going to miss the most - the people, my HIMYM family. It hit me in the room and I got really sad - when will I ever see these people again in the same room? When will I see them at all? That's what I'll miss the most. And the paychecks. |
I really loved when you put "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp" How hard is to get the rights of some songs? Is there any song you could not put because you couldn't get the license? | Cool! I'm glad you loved our use of "Frankie Crisp". Was such a fulfilling experience being able to use music from a legendary icon like George Harrison- he's a Beatle! Our original plan was to bookend the season with "Frankie Crisp" in the opener and "All Things Must Pass" in the finale. We did run into some difficulties clearing "All Things..." when it came time to because our finale coincided with the release of the wonderful 2 part HBO documentary about George. In the end I was able to reverse their initial decision to decline our request for the song but in the end "Frankie Crisp" played the finale better that "All Things" so we bookended the season with the same song, which I loved! |
As I scroll through my Shazam tag list I see a LOT of songs I discovered via HIMYM so thanks for not only choosing wonderful music for the show, but also choosing music that has made it into my regular listening rotation. Do you remember the first CD you ever owned or bought with your own money? Cassette? CASSINGLE? | Awesome! Glad to hear it! That makes me so happy that you've connected with songs we've used in the show . At one point in my life I did have quite a Cassingle collection but if memory serves the first full length album/compilation I owned was a CD of the soundtrack album to the classic Eddie Murphy film Boomerang. PM Dawn, Color Me Badd...I played the shit out of it! |
What's the most outrageous thing to happen while filming? | I'm not on set very often but judging by the hilarious things I've seen in the gag/blooper reel they play at our annual wrap parties some pretty crazy things have happened while filming. Having Boyz II Men on the show was a lot of fun. They were the NICEST guys and we had a lot of fun hanging out with them on set. |
What's your favorite music moment from the show? | Oh my god, so many! I don't think I could pick a favorite but there are some that will always have a special place in my memory bank. Episode 201 in particular- I was just hired onto the series after working with CB & CT on the Season 1 DVD . Carter knew he really wanted to use "Cryin' In the Streets" by George Perkins to open the episode . It's a fairly obscure song from circa 1970 and I had to track down the rights owners and get it cleared. Was no easy task but I got it done. Also in 201 we used the Grant Lee Phillips cover of The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry". That came from my first pitch of ideas to the show and it felt indescribably amazing that they picked it. That's the moment I felt like I was truly a member of the team. |
Hello! I just want to say thanks, you've introduced me to some of my favorite songs and artists. Can you tell us anything about the music that would of been used (like second options) in big scenes like Barney's proposal or the finale of season 8? | OK I'll divulge a bit of behind the scenes info . Part of my approach to my role on the show - especially for the really big moments in the show like season finales - is to look under every rock imaginable and present a lot of songs options, even if just to make sure the song we've picked is the right one. It's a little bit like playing Devil's Advocate. CB had the idea to use "Simple Song" but we wanted to make sure it was the perfect choice since it would play when we finally see "The Mother" for the first time. I think it is the perfect song for that moment but "Stubborn Love" by the Lumineers and "Safe" by Airborne Toxic Events were close runner ups. |
Hey there Andy! What bands do you like? | Too many to list but I'd say Wilco, Dr Dog, and My Morning Jacket to name a few...and I think you can see a pattern there. Does anyone know Gram Parsons ? He used to use the phrase "Cosmic American Music" to describe his band The Flying Burrito Bros...I guess I'd say that's my wheelhouse and those bands are prime examples. |
Hi Andy. I'm a huge fan of the show, and of the music that appears on it. Most of the bands I've listened to over the past few years I've gotten into from HIMYM. I was just wondering if you could talk about the scene with Robin and Barney where they dance to "Groove is in the Heart." Did you consider any other songs for that moment? | We did look at other songs for that spot. I remember getting word from CB & CT over our summer hiatus that they wanted to kick off season 7 with an incredible Barney/Robin dance number . Looking back at my records I ended up pitching them about 15 songs for that spot ranging from Otis Redding to Blur. Inside info! |
Thanks for doing this, Andy! What a great run you've all had so far. i've noticed so much connection between the characters and song choices. Some of the best ones I've ever seen used on the show have been in the scenes with Stella and Ted.. "Shake It Out," "Love Saves The Day," and the one during the episode "As Fast As She Can," the name of which is escaping me at the moment. Did any special thought go into those choices? | We always put a lot of thought into our song choices and yes there are many connecting factors that go into our creative brainstorming. We always want the songs to have a connection to the characters and the storyline, the right song typically seems like a seamless, natural fit. I m very focused on making the right lyrical choice as well - you don't want to be too on the nose where the lyrics are mirroring the action on screen but you also don't want to be too vague or off base either. Sometimes it's a tough line to cross but when it's right it's pretty magical. I'm excited for people to hear what we have in store for the penultimate episode of the series "End of the Aisle" (airing 3/24!). The song we're using just lined up so beautifully lyrical- it adds a nice touch on many levels. |
What got you into music? | You know I'm not sure but I've always been into music. The more I think back to what kind of role music played in my youth the more it makes sense that I'm doing what I'm doing. I can remember making my mom play Billy Ocean's "When the Going gets Tough..." from a boombox on the sideline of my youth soccer games. And for third grade show and tell I brought in a Righteous Brothers LP and played "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" for my classmates - I had recently seen Top Gun and my favorite scene from the movie was when they sang that song to pick up women. I think I was 7/8 at the time and I resonated with the song more than the dogfights. |
I'm not sure exactly what to ask so...what are your thoughts on dried fruits? | MMM love me some dried fruit. Do you have a Ron Popeil dehydrator? If so, let's party. Especially if you invite some mangoes and apricots. |
What TV show has the best theme song? | Curious to hear if you have a favorite. I used to love the opening of Wonder Years, their theme song was Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends". True Blood's theme song (and whole opening title sequence) is the best thing about the show. |
Hey Andy. Any stories about what it was like working on Homeland? | Homeland is a very interesting show to work on. Kevin Edelman is the music supervisor and I'm his right hand on all of his projects so I amquite involved in it. I love reading the scripts of the show, it's like reading a gripping novel but you have to wait a few weeks until the next chapter comes out. The way we approach music on the show is based on showrunner Alex Gansa's vision for it. He wanted to create a sense of reality to the world of the show , at least as much as you can with a fictional television series. So you won't see us play a song over a montage of scenes like you would in say a Grey's Anatomy type show. That would pull the audience out of this grounded "real world" feel we're trying to build. Instead we're very focused on using music to inform the audience about the characters. Carrie obviously listens to a lot of classic jazz , mainly from the be-bop era. This plays into her "frenetic" state of mind caused by her illness. I remember early on in season 1 when we used Toad the Wet Sprocket in the background of the welcome home party Jessica throws for Brody. The idea was we wanted the party to be a way for Jessica to remind Brody of his home and life before he went off to war and eventually spent 8 years being tortured and brainwashed. Music was a way to help accomplish that so we thought about songs that would be from important times in their youth that he may connect to happy memories of when he heard the songs. |
I never expected such a well thought out answer to my simple question, Andy. Thank you so much for the reply and for doing this interview. Often times the folks behind the music in some of our favorite shows don't get the recognition that they deserve. You're awesome. | Thank you! Happy to be basking in the spotlight for a few minutes. |
Who is the best singer in the show? | NPH and Milioti. |
Will there be a second volume of "How I Met Your Music" ? | We hope to release an updated "deluxe" edition and add all the new songs that have come since we put that out. What did everyone think of "Soul Bang"? The slow R & B version of "Bang Bang Bangity Bang" that we had Sam Moore from Sam & Dave sing on. |
Who are your role models? | Now that you ask...I guess I better find some! |
As far as your song selection goes, what scene is your absolute favorite that you've done? | Impossible to pick one favorite but these are high up on the list in terms of my song selects: "Boys Don't Cry" Grant Lee Phillips "Time Is Coming" The Elected "Heavy Hours" Crooked Fingers "Prophets" AC Newman "If the Hudson Overflows" Goldspot - this timed out perfectly as the song was released as a benefit for victims of Hurricane Sandy and the band donated proceeds from the license fee for the use of the song "The Wind" Cat Stevens "Let Your Heart Hold Fast" Fort Atlantic and so many more! |
Time is running out Mr. Gowan. I hope that we can all board the Murder Train one last time before the series ends... Regardless, I don't really have a question that you're probably allowed to answer (do it! do it!) but I must applaud your choices for HIMYM - they are impeccable. | Murder Train is awesome. Hats off to our very talented composer John Swihart for not only writing and recording that song but singing on it as well which I know was torture for him! |
No questions just saying "The funeral" from "Band of Horses" is one of my favorite song since I listened it on HIMYM. The ending of that episode was beautiful with this song ! | Glad you liked it - we went through a ton of songs for that spot. Just saw them play an acoustic show in a gorgeous church here in LA. Check out their acoustic album they just released. Love that band. |
I would also like to know the answer of this question. It doth keep me awake at night. | The Foreskins was the fictional name we gave the "band" behind the song. Sorry if that ruins any dreams of one day catching a Foreskins show at the local dive bar. |
A song from the band Real Estate was in the episode "Unfinished" which is the third episode from the sixth season. Just wanted to thank you for putting it in there. They are a great band from my hometown in NJ. So, thanks! | You're welcome! I really like that band and everyone should check out their new record, Atlas. That was another great music moment in the show and made me very happy that we got to introduce the band to a larger audience. That's definitely one of my favorite parts to my job - getting to help expose bands to listeners who may not otherwise come across them. It definitely brings me joy to hear from fans that they discovered a new favorite band through our use of a song in a TV show or movie and I often hear from the bands themselves that they get such a huge response from the world at large when one of their songs is used in a great way. |
Dried Pineapple is the bomb too. | They usually put sugar on dried pineapple don't they? Not for me. |
I just checked out a how i met your mother playlist someone made on spotify. I just want to say that i really appreciate what you do. I studied music biz and took a music for film class, and the music is really a huge character on how i met your mother. You are a mastermind, | Thank you! It's been a very rewarding 8 years on the show but hearing how our song choices are connecting people is really special. Much of the time I'm just a guy sitting in my office staring at a computer screen and listening to music with headphones. Can feel sort of lonely sometimes but then I remember 10 Million + people a week are listening and paying attention to the choices we make. |

Does Felicia Day ever have really bad breath that you can't tell her about, but it makes you want to go sit on the other side of the room, but you can't, because you work together sometimes, so you just breath through your mouth and pray for her to leave? Asking for a friend. | Pretty much like every goddamn time I'm around her. She really needs to lay off the garlic hummus. |
If you can have any theme song play when you enter a room (a la WWE), what would it be? | When I was a kid, I loved WWF. I watched it every Saturday morning, and one of the highlights of my life was when my parents took my siblings and me to see it, live, at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. |
So I guess I was probably ten or eleven, and Hulk Hogan was my hero. I got one of my T-shirts out of my dresser, and I cut it up into a Hulkster pattern, with the slashes across the back and everything. Then, I built a wrestling ring out of couch cushions and blankets and stuff in our living room, and decided that I was going to make a huge, grand entrance, just like Hulk Hogan.
I went to my parents records, and took out what was, at the time, a pretty radical record: Starship's Knee Deep In The Hoopla. I put it on the turntable, cranked the volume up, and readied the needle. I said, in my best announcer voice, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is our title bout for the evening! It is scheduled for one fall! Hailing from Sunland, California, weighing in at 90 pounds, the heavyweight champion of the world ... WIL WHEATON!" I dropped the needle on the record, then ran out of the room as fast as I could, so I could start strutting across the kitchen and into my "arena" as We Built This City On Rock and Roll played.
I was fully committed to the bit, too. I was pointing at the imaginary people in the audience, putting my hand up to my ear just like Hulk Hogan did, and then I tore off my t-shirt while growling and hearing fifteen thousand people scream for me, as I marched around the wrestling ring I'd made out of four couch cushions and some blankets.
And the thing about all of this is that nobody ever knew about it but me until just now, because when I did this stupid thing (that was actually totally awesome according to young me), nobody was in the house but me, and I put everything away before my parents got home.
I, uh, probably wouldn't have a theme song today.
I would have been in deep shit for ripping up a perfectly good tshirt. | That's one of the reasons I did it when nobody was home. |
Have you considered dressing up like Jonathan Frakes to conventions now that you have the beard for it? | You know, I hadn't until just this moment. I think that's a thing that needs to happen. I'll do the walk and everything. |
[What you gotta do is that awesome chair thing he does.] (Link to www.youtube.com. | If you watch one of the Big Bang Theory episodes I did this year, you'll see that I did The Riker when I sat down. |
Random story time: A few years ago, Stone Brewing released a mint chocolate stout. I was thrilled. I ran down to my local chain liquor store (BevMo) in the San Fernando Valley and asked the clerk where it was. He laughed and said, "Man, I'm sorry. We're holding the case for Wil Wheaton." I said that you (Wil) wouldn't miss one bottle, to which they replied, "Yeah, but he's pretty important. Who are you again?" Every time I go there and the guy who told me that (think his name is Christian) is working, I've made sure to mention, "Hey, if Wil Wheaton comes in, tell him I said he can go fuck himself and that he's a talentless piece of shit." He laughs and everyone around us thinks I'm a massive turd for talking shit about you since they don't know the context. If there's ever a beer that's not in stock at that store, my immediate response is, "Seriously? Did that fucking asshole Wil Wheaton buy them all?" Still get nothing but dead stares with that one. But anyway...how was that Stone mint chocolate stout? | I did have that stout, and it was the only mint chocolate stout I've ever had that I enjoyed ... and the bottle that you wanted was the best of them all. |
Who would be your absolute dream lineup for an episode of TableTop? | Oh I know the answer to this: it's just me and Billie Piper in a game of "let's make out for twenty minutes." |
Why Billie Piper? | Because Billie Piper. |
If I see you in public, should I offer to buy you a beer, a book, or just give you the thumbs-up-dude? | I'm such a socially awkward penguin in real life, the thumbs-up-dude would probably be the best choice. |
True story, at PAX 2012 I saw Wil walking toward me on the street and I said "Hey Wil!" You said back to me "Hey... Guy!" and then we just kept on walking. | I got misty-eyed reading this. Those were good times, random guy on the street. |
Have you ever witnessed Felicia day angry and what is the worst swear word she uses ? | Felicia and I are like brother and sister, and while I know she's seen me at my worst, I've never seen her get angry. She's very focused and super smart, and I think that instead of getting angry, she just gets shit done. |
I've never thought about trying to get her to say really offensive swears, but now I think I have to.
Wil, you're a handsome man but the photo currently at the top of your Wikipedia page does you no justice. You look like you've just eaten a spicy California burrito; all sweaty and flatulent. Do you have a favorite photo of yourself? This picture has got to go. | Woah, that's not the most flattering thing in the world, is it? I think I should get a new picture there, but whenever I try to do anything with Wikipedia it turns into the most annoying edit war in the history of life, and I just don't have time for that BS. |
Win at board games? | Nailed it. |
BTW, when my wife and I play games with friends, if anyone bumps the board/table now, it is referred to as "pulling an Anne". Your wife is beautiful and I'm sure she is lovely, but she has a legacy now. | This is actually fairly common in the tabletop gaming community, now. It makes me furiously happy. |
Hey Wil, Have you heard of Storium? It's an online storytelling game-a little more free form than normal tabletop roleplaying. What do you think of it? | I love Storium! My friends created it, and I'm proud to be a backer. |
I love that you've made it to the RPG game stretch goal - do you know yet what you're going to play? Do you want WOTC/D&D involved, or specifically not? Your games with AQI got me back into D&D after a long hiatus, and I really have enjoyed Chris Perkins' adventure design, and would love to see him take on a long-form campaign. OR are you planning to DM/GM? | I have a very good idea about what I'm going to play, but I'm not ready to talk about it, yet. I can tell you that it won't be D&D, I am going to GM. |
Do you know who's going to be playing yet? I thought the Dragon Age group all had great chemistry; are any of them coming back? (assuming I haven't just derped and missed this info!) | We haven't announced the players, yet, so you didn't miss anything. |
Which main character actor or actress was the biggest jackass while you were Wesley on TNG and why? | Probably me, because I was an obnoxious and annoying teenager who was trying his hardest to not be lame, and usually failing. |
Were you ever awkwardly attracted to Gates McFadden in your scenes together? | Nope. I had a massive crush on Marina, but Gates was more like a mom to me, so ... no. |
What will differentiate TWWP from shows like Tosh or Attack of the Show? And will we see any tabletop gaming segments? | I think Tosh is mean, and not very clever. One of our prime directives is that we aren't mean, we don't make fun of our audience, and we're not afraid to make jokes that maybe only 10% of the audience will appreciate because they're that particular kind of geek. I think we'll have some similarities with Attack, just because I loved that show so much, and I think they blazed a great trail for us to sort of follow. |
Also, can you maybe start lobbying SyFy to shange the name again? We all think SciFy is a good compromise. | We probably won't see any tabletop gaming segments, because I have that whole other show where we cover that. |
Ha. I wish. I get so many angry emails and phone calls from the network when I joke about that, especially when I call it "the network formerly-known as Sci-Fi", because they don't really have a sense of humor about it. I mean, I can't imagine why they'd be sensitive about it. It's not like everyone who is in their core audience felt punched in the face when they did that, or anything...
please don't fire me Syfy I'll be good.
If you had to play against DEATH in a board game (like in Bill and Ted) which game would you choose? | Something where I think I'd have an inherent advantage, because I've played it so much. If I had to choose something right now, I'd probably choose Carcassonne or Takenoko. |
Death has eternity to gain skill and prowess at all games though. You'd be better off just challenging him to a coin toss. I'd take a 50/50 chance versus a completely lopsided game any day of the week. | Your math checks out. |
Thanks for introducing me to a world of board games that I never knew existed. One quick question, if you could re-theme ANY game, what would it be? | Dominion. I love that game so much, but the theme means basically nothing. |
Do ants have lungs? | I'm sorry, that's not a beard question. |
At the very least, Roxann Dawson wasn't very happy with you. Where you a different person back then? Do you think you just didn't come off well in that episode? Is there not friendship and fraternity amongst cast members of different Star Trek shows? | Oh man, that thing. So it was a deliberate joke that Roxann and I planned together, and coordinated with the producers of the show. We did it so well, the audience completely believed that it was real. |
Writer, actor, homebrewer and philanthropist? Is there anything you can't do? | I can't dance at all, and I can hardly play any instruments. |
So I guess I've spent the last 6 months writing the Wil Wheaton 1-Man-Band Musical for nothing then! | Dude, just get Julian Speroni to play in it. |
Hi Wil. As someone who has also never seen Rampart do you think I should? | No, watch Akira again instead. |
love your audiobook work. Both Ready Player One and Fuzzy Nation are amongst my favorite listens. Can you tell us about any more that you have recently completed or will be doing soon? | I recorded an audiobook on Monday, but I don't think I can say what it was or when it will be released. I love that shirt. Clever is my Kryptonite, and that shirt is damn clever. Good work, sir. |
A new Scalzi book? Neat! But really, all of your work with his books really made the experiences so much more than just reading. Your reading of Fuzzy nation was so moving during Pinto's scene as well as the court scenes. | Thank you. I had a hell of a good time doing that book. |
What is one thing you wish you could go back in time and tell your younger self? | I actually wouldn't tell him anything, because I believe that our lives are the result of everything we do, good and bad, joyful and painful, celebrated and regretted. I absolutely love my life right now, and I can look myself in the eye without ever feeling ashamed of myself. I wouldn't want to do anything to change my life or who I am, even though a lot of my younger years were not always awesome. |
So I've started playing Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Carcassone and all of your video have been a great help. I want to introduce my playgroup to something a bit more involved though. What would you suggest would be a good next step for something more strategy based and less dependent on random factors like dice? | Check out Lords of Waterdeep, Revolution, and Small World. |
was wondering how you deal with/respond to the people that criticize you for being on The Big Bang Theory? | Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I'm not required to listen or respond to it. |
Thanks for doing this AMA! As a fan of the Detroit Red Wings (formerly of the Western Conference), I just want to say... GO KINGS GO! Would love to see the Kings finish off the other CA teams and take a run at The Cup! After the release of a couple really short educational videos, I've received numerous comments suggesting that I look like you. I think it's the beardedness: Link to www.youtube.com. And last, what do you think about Corey Perry and his antics: Link to imgur.com ? | My instinct when I saw Perry do that was that he was being a douche, but then I found out that he and Carter are friends, so I thought it was actually pretty cool. |
Wil Wheaton, If you were to take over the world, what tabletop game would you mandate be in everyone's home? | Diplomacy. |
Do you have a say in how 'you' are portrayed on The Big Bang Theory? | Occasionally, Steve Molaro will ask me if I've had an experience in my real life that would sort of inspire them to do something with my character on the show. Probably the best example of that sort of thing is when he asked me if there was anything in my real life that could help them develop my conversation with Sheldon after he finds out he has to retract his discovery. |
Hi Wil. Will TableTop Season 3 be available anywhere else besides YouTube? | Yes. We'll have it in as many different places as we can, which is one of the huge benefits of being completely independent. |
Hi! So among Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, and maybe Netrunner, what game do you think should be a staple in everyone's Game Cabinet? And will you ever get around to publishing that book of conversations with your pets? | Of those games you listed, definitely Settlers. |
Hey Wil, just wanted to say thanks for being one of the most awesome people ever. | PIE FOREVER. |
I was wondering: which side do you come down on in the cake vs pie debate? | And now a question for you: losing your wedding ring in the ocean vs. not losing your wedding ring in the ocean? |
I'd say only if you also dump wine on your new wife, her step mom and break a few things over the course of the day as well. | Yes! Do all of those things, and you almost have a bingo! |
Hi Wil, is it true that you are a Cumberbitch? y/y. | So much yes. |
Your desert island board game? (assuming friends are marooned with you) | That one where you build a working transporter to get you back to civilization. |
Hi Wil, I'm a big fan of Tabletop. Will we see Battlestar Galactica played this season? | I'm not sure. I love that game, but I think it may be just slightly too complex for our format. |
I'll playtest it with Producer Boyan, though, and see if we can make it work.
Thrilled to see Tabletop season 3 and the RPG spinoff are being so robustly funded on IndieGoGo. Do you think the show has a future beyond season 3, and if so, do you have any ideas about making it self-sustaining going forward, or do you think it will be crowd-funded from here on out? | Crowdfunding season three was an amazing experience, because it showed us in a very tangible way how much Tabletop means to people all over the world, but it was also a little weird for me. I'm very self sufficient in every aspect of my life, and if I could afford to fund it myself, I would. At every step of the way, I had to remind myself that this isn't about me, it's about the community of Tabletop gamers who love this show and want to see more of it. When I remembered that I wasn't doing this for me, but was doing it because it's so important to so many people, it felt less weird to me. |
I don't know if we'll go beyond season three (we need to finish season three first, and who knows what's going to happen in the Mysterious Future) but if we do, I hope we can make it self-sustaining in some way that lets us maintain our independence, and keep the production values as awesome as they are now.
Hi Wil, I'm so happy you're doing an AMA! I always get all giddy and squee! when you're on Big Bang. | > Are there any games that you'd love to do a show on, but are too complicated to explain quick enough to make the show entertaining. (I'm thinking Arkham Horror). |
PS - Can you make an episode of Big Bang where you make out with Sheldon? It would be adorable!! Maybe bring it up to the writers? | Those games, though, aren't exactly good introductory games, and one of the prime directives of Tabletop is to showcase games that are an easy introduction to our hobby. |
Have you heard of the Hard Science Fiction Tabletop RPG called Eclipse Phase? | I've heard of Eclipse Phase, but I've never played it. I love science fiction, but I've never been that into SF RPGs for some reason. |
What is your opinion on J.J.Abrams' Star Trek restart? | I think he did a brilliant job of translating Star Trek into a language and style that is relevant to my kids' generation. Hopefully, the Millenials will see this version of Star Trek, get interested in the older series, and become full-on Trekkies. |
THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME RIGHT NOW. Last day of finals and I'm still powering through season 2 instead of studying. | WHAT THE HELL?! Get off Reddit, turn off Tabletop, and study for your finals! All this other stuff will still be here when you're done. Now: go kick ass. I'm counting on you, so don't let me down. |
It's not about anything you listed to ask you about, but any idea when you'll be back on @midnight? I absolutely loved the episode you were on. | YES! I'm talking with the gang over there to set up a show in July. |
Have you seen his new tatoo? He's clearly a closet Wings fan. | ಠ_ಠ |
Question: As a long-time member of Reddit do you feel like the community has changed for the better, worse or hasn't really changed since it has become more popular? What do you think we should do to improve Reddit? | My Reddit experience hasn't changed very much over the years. People are generally decent to me, and when someone's a dick, RES makes sure I never have to see them again. |
As a celebrity what is the worst thing? Paparazzi? Repetitive questions? Annoying fans? No one getting your highly intellectual jokes? | I'm very lucky in that I'm not someone those shitbag scumfuckers the Paparazzi care about, but I once was, and it was awful. I don't particularly enjoy talking to the press, especially the entertainment press because it's so goddamn vapid, but that's part of my job at times, so I just deal with it. |
Honestly, though, I have a wonderful life, and the few small things I have to endure because of my job are entirely worth it.
I'm really looking forward to The Wil Wheaton Project, but, as often happens with many TV shows, it won't air in my country (Spain), at least in the near future. Since the show is about trending topics and news of the week, I'd like to watch it as soon as possible, but the only way to do that is torrenting it (assuming it's not online and without geographic restrictions). Would you be okay with that? Do you have an alternative solution other than not watching it? | I just want as many people as possible to see the show, so unless and until the network or whoever makes it easy for you (like with global streaming, which I've been pushing for but they can't do because of a huge list of reasons) do what you have to so you can see it. |
Are there plans for a Cards Against Humanity Tabletop sometime in the (hopefully near) future? | Yes. We're going to do a very dirty "Tabletop After Dark" episode in season three, in which we will play Cards Against Humanity. |
Do you wear socks with your sandals? | Only when I'm wearing shorts. |
For the RPG show, have you thought about whether or not you'll be a player or a DM? | I plan to be the GM. |
Can we go back to your early work (like Stand By Me and TNG) and do a remastered version where we add a beard to your characters? | I'm pretty sure that this has to happen, now. |
When are you and Jeph Jacques just going to get it over with and fuck already? | Hey hey hey settle down. We haven't even been on a proper date, yet. |
Could you explain in detail your emotions during the Kings first round? | Pick pretty much any .gif from /nonononoyes and you'll have a good idea. |
How is your meemaw? | I don't have any conventions coming up before Comicon, so she's doing fine, thank you. |
Excluding Star Trek, what has been the project that you have enjoyed the most? What was it like to work on "Leverage?" | We haven't shot anything for The Wil Wheaton Project, yet, but I love working with my writers and producers. When we get into the writer's room to work out our jokes, it turns into this really wonderful game of just trying to make each other laugh, and it's amazing. |
"I'm sure you're tired of hearing Star Trek questions but Whoopi Goldberg, you ever hit that?" | Please don't talk to me when I'm bowling. I need to stay focused. |
When you look back at your accomplishments - anything particular come to mind? Personally, I think this speech is the best thing you've ever done. Edit: If you see this, pat yourself on the back for doing good in the world. | Thank you. I just do my best to be the change I'd like to see in the world. |
Hey Wil! Saw a video of you talking to a little girl about being bullied and made fun of for being a nerd. An incredibly touching moment indeed, but I'm wondering, how can "nerd culture" come out to fight injustice? What can we do to try to make the world a better place? | This will seem corny, and it feels corny to say it, but it's true: a wise human being once said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." |
I'm wondering: Why an octopus for a tattoo? | Because I have loved cephalopods my whole life, and Octopodes, especially. They're beautiful animals, and when I decided that I wanted to get a tattoo to go with my wife's heartbeat on my other arm, it was an easy choice. |
Wil just want to shout out right quick, you did a FANTASTIC job narrating Ready player one, but I have to ask are you coming back to narrate any more books, namely Armada by Ernest Cline? | I would love to narrate that book, so if they ask me, I'll do whatever I can to fit it into my schedule. |
Hey Wil! You seem to be so busy with Tabletop, game design, your new show, cameos, time with your family, etc... Do you have free time for casual gaming anymore? Do you have a core group that you hardcore game with? | I have been playing with the same group of friends since high school. We try to get together twice a month, but we haven't had time for a full game day since the beginning of the year. |
What is your favorite protein to put on a burrito? | I like chicken, the spicier the better. |
I recently discovered your tabletop series and have been completely addicted to it. My wallet hates you right now... Definitely looking forward to season 3! But anyway what would you say is your all time favorite game? | I love so many games from so many different eras, it's hard to say. At the moment, I love Agricola and Takenoko, but when I was in high school I loved Car Wars and 40K. |
What are your thoughts that the Season 3 contributions have topped $1,180,000.00. Are you going to release a video like you did for the earmarks of $750,000? | Yeah, we shot a video today that may go out tonight, if our editors can turn it around that quickly. |
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. Man, so much I would like to ask, but the one thing I keep coming back to is, are we ever going to get Memories of the Future Volume 2? | It's something I'd like to do, because I have about half of it finished, but realistically it wouldn't happen until next year, at the soonest. |
On a scale of 1 to 10, how fun is it to send Warren Ellis questions on tumblr about his beard? | Easily 15 out of 10. |
Favorite Kings player of all time? Favorite Current Kings Player? How much do you love Gaborik? | Team Gabbo For Life. |
I am super excited by all the topics for the AMA, but I am worried brewing is going to get missed, so any ambitious homebrew projects coming up? | I've had a porter kit in my office for a month that I haven't had time to make, but maybe this weekend that will finally change. |
If you told 8 year old you all about your life now, what would he find the coolest/weirdest? | He'd be pretty excited about all the games he gets to play. |
What is your 2nd favourite nhl team? | Whoever is playing the Ducks. |
Hey, Wil, I once read that when you were young you dated Christa Denton, the young actress who played the sister in the movie "The Gate". What was it like dating her? I always thought she was cute. | This is the first time I've ever heard of this, so ... i think you got bad intel. |
Very simple question for you: do you have a favourite flag? | Yes. |
Nah, man. The leg has to go over the back of the chair to be a full Riker move. Like the chair isn't even there. | This is true, but I had to modify it so it would slip past the network. |
This would be a huge improvement over the other picture. | Make it happen, Internet. |
If I were Wil, I would call it "Cream of Wheaton": Cherry red ice cream, caramel swirls, and blueberries. ...and if you're wondering how that color combination would look. | I love that. Have some gold, on me. |
Ice cream that tastes like nothing called, "Bland By Me". | I don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is hilarious. |
I think we should stay focused on Rampart you guys. | YES! Thank you. Finally, someone who gets it. |
Rampart without trackballs is not Rampart. | I wanted to like that game so much, and it just destroyed me whenever I tried to play it. I don't think I've gotten past the first level, ever. |
Yes, over here, n'hey, n'hey. In episode BF12, you were battling barbarians while riding a winged Appaloosa, yet in the very next scene, my dear, you're clearly atop a winged Arabian. Please do explain it. | Obviously, it's a sort of magical horse. I mean, even a child could have seen that. |
When it comes to gaming, you mostly only ever talk about tabletops games, which I love. | I love classic video games, because I grew up during video gaming's golden age. On the 2600, I loved Yar's Revenge. On NES I loved the original Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, Blades of Steel, and RC Pro-Am. On Sega, I loved NHL '94 and Mortal Kombat II. On PS3, it was all about Vice City. On Xbox, I currently love Borderlands 2 and will always love Dragon Age: Origins. |
But I was wondering what, if any, is your favorite classic or modern video game. | I play a bunch of indie titles on Steam, too many to list them all, but highly recommend Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable, Gone Home, and, of course, Civ V. |
But... Vice City was on ps2... HEY! THIS GUY ISN'T ONE OF US AT ALL! | Oh, you're right. Shit. I meant PS2. My favorite game on PS3 is The Last of Us. |
Wil, I'm in LA and. I'm just getting into homebrewing. I was wondering where you do your local homebrew shopping. | I love Eagle Rock Homebrew Supply. Just don't go there when the ponytail guy is working, because he's really a jerk for some reason. Greg and Kevin, who own it, are usually there on the weekends, and they're awesome. |
Black socks for extra style points. | Duh. |
